5 Ayurvedic Steps to Support Better Eyesight Naturally
Can eyesight power be reduced? To get an answer to this I examined some basic classic tests and also spoke to some of the modern medicine practitioners and experts. According to modern medical science eyesight power can only be reduced through an operation. Modern science may not agree to this completely.
But ayurveda clearly states whatever you age may be, you just need a few ayurvedic herbs to start with this routine.
1. Eye Wash
Washing our face and eyes is the first thing we all do in the morning. But, if your final goal is to fix your eyesight, then it is really important to take your eye wash routine to an upgraded level.
- Step 1: Fill your mouth with water, it helps your eye muscles stretch properly.
- Step 2: Splash cold water on your eyes, it gives you an instant cooling effect. This should be done for at least 2 to 3 minutes.
- Step 3: Use an eye wash cup to wash your eyes with rosewater. Add 10-15 drops of pure rose water and mix it with cold water.
- Step 4: Place it on any one eye firmly so that water does not leak from the edges.
- Step 5: Open your eye and allow rose water to touch the eye. Move the pupil around in circular motion for at least 1 minute.
- Step 6: Throw this water and repeat the same for the next eye.
This 5-minute eye wash routine may help soothe eye irritation and reduce the sensation of heat or strain in the eyes, which Ayurveda considers one of the contributing factors to weak eyesight.
Disclaimer: During this process, mild redness in the eyes may occur, which is generally considered normal. However, if the redness persists or causes discomfort, it is advised not to ignore it and to consult a qualified ayurvedic doctor or an eye specialist.
2. Nourishing Morning Eye Tonic
This ayurvedic tonic, if consumed regularly on an empty stomach, helps increase eyesight.
To prepare this drink you need 7 gurbandi almonds soaked overnight along with 4 whole black pepper, and a small amount of threaded rock sugar (as per taste) and grind it into a fine paste.
Heat a pan and add one glass of pure desi cow milk and add the almond mixture in the milk and allow it to boil for 10 mins, on low flame. Pour it in a glass and drink it (Do not strain).
To make sure this tonic works well, it is important to avoid eating anything for the next one hour.
3. Screen Breaks and Eye Relaxation
If your profession requires excessive screen time, try incorporating a few simple habits while working that may help reduce eye strain and support faster recovery.
- After every one hour of screen time, take a break for 30 mins. Close your eyes, relax and drink water.
- Relax your eyes, rub your palms and place it on your eyes. This is an ancient yoga practice that has been used for years.
- Press points (acupressure) on your palms or do eye exercises like eye rotation.
4. Ayurvedic Eye Support
Before going to bed, about 30 minutes before drinking milk, take a small spoon of Maha Triphala Ghrita mixed with 250 mg of Abhrak Bhasma, and then drink warm milk on top of it.
Maha Triphala Ghrita is a classical Ayurvedic preparation made by processing herbs with desi cow ghee. Abhrak Bhasma is also a traditional Ayurvedic medicine prepared from purified mica along with a combination of medicinal herbs.
Both Triphala Ghrita and Abhrak Bhasma are classical Ayurvedic formulations, and their preparation methods are described in detail in traditional Ayurvedic texts.
5. Foot Massage and Eye Drop
Before sleeping, take a small amount of Maha Triphala Ghrita and gently massage it on the soles of your feet. In Ayurveda, this practice is known as Padabhyanga. It is believed to promote relaxation and may help improve overall circulation in the body, including the eyes indirectly.
After this, some traditional practices also suggest putting 2 drops of Maha Triphala Ghrita in the eyes and keeping them closed for about 10 minutes, or simply sleeping right away and allowing the eyes to rest overnight.
In Ayurveda, ghee has traditionally been used for its soothing and nourishing properties, and it is considered beneficial for overall eye comfort and cleansing in classical texts.
Other Helpful Practices
- Blink eyes more often it prevents drying of the eye
- Sleep in a dark room
- Protect your eyes from heat
- Consume one amla everyday
- Use screen guard
- Eat eye strengthening foods like carrot, ghee, moong dal
- Practice sarvaang asana for blood circulation
Ayurvedic texts suggest that by consistently following this routine, some people may notice improvement in eye comfort and clarity within 2 to 3 months. However, results can vary from person to person, and maintaining discipline with the practice is considered very important in traditional Ayurveda.
The Bottom Line
Over the last 10 years, the number of people wearing glasses has significantly increased. One of the main reasons is prolonged screen exposure, which leads to dry and strained eyes. In many cases, nutritional deficiencies, especially low Vitamin B12 and other essential nutrients, can also contribute to weak vision and eye-related issues.
