Cancer is one of the most serious health concerns worldwide, and early detection plays a crucial role in a successful treatment. While cancer was once considered rare in some regions, cases have increased significantly in recent years due to lifestyle changes, diet patterns, environmental factors, and genetic risks.

The important thing to understand is that most symptoms listed below are not cancer in most cases, but they still deserve medical attention if they persist.

This blog breaks down 6 early warning signs of cancer, along with essential lifestyle insights on prevention and awareness.

1. Unusual Lumps or Tissue Thickening

One of the most commonly known warning signs is the appearance of a new lump or thickened area in the body. While it is true that a lump is an obvious feature of a possible cancer. There are many reasons because of which a small lump or cyst can be formed in the body. But in rare cases, it can be a possible indication of cancer. However it is important to be careful if:

  • Lump feels hard and fixed (not movable)
  • It does not cause pain (many cancer-related lumps are painless)
  • It gradually increases in size
  • Appears in areas like neck, armpit, groin, breast, or testicles

Note: Most lumps are harmless and may be caused by cysts, infections, or swollen lymph nodes. Not all painless lumps are cancerous, but any lump that persists or continues to grow should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

2. Unexplained Weight Loss

Unexplained weight loss can sometimes be one of the earliest warning signs of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, this symptom is seen most often in cancers of the esophagus, pancreas, stomach, and lungs. However, losing weight without trying does not always mean cancer—many other health conditions can also cause it.

Note: Doctors generally recommend medical evaluation if someone loses more than 10 pounds (about 4.5 kg) or more than 5% of their body weight without intentionally dieting or exercising.

It is not always cancer, possible causes can also be thyroid issues, diabetes, Tuberculosis and digestive disorders. Still unexplained weight loss should never be ignored especially if there are no changes in the diet or activity level.

3. Unusual Bleeding or Blood in Body Fluids

Unexplained bleeding is another important symptom to watch.

Occasional nosebleeds are common and usually harmless, but if nose bleeding is persistent and unexplained and you have no idea why your nose is bleeding, then in a rare case this can be an early sign of colon cancer which should not be ignored.

Another sign of unexplained bleeding is when there is blood in urine because blood in urine is never considered normal, except in a case where a woman is menstruating.

Apart from these blood in vomit, blood in spit is not normal if it is not because of bleeding gums. But blood in sputum is completely abnormal and can be seen as a sign of Tuberculosis and lung cancer. Blood in stool can be normal if someone is going through piles, but sometimes if the stool is dark and tarry , this can also be due to bleeding in the upper part of the gut.

For example there is bleeding in the food pipe, the person eats food and the blood gets mixed in it. Post digestion when the waste is evacuated , that stool will be dark and tarry. This occult bleeding can also be seen in the case of vomiting where blood is found in grounded coffee colour, this indicates an internal bleeding in the stomach.

If these symptoms persist for more than a few days , it should be checked immediately. In most cases it is possible due to several other reasons and possibly not cancer. However it is always better to get it checked for an early detection.

4. Persistent Cough or Voice Changes

Red flags:

  • Cough lasting more than 2–3 weeks or months
  • Cough not responding to treatment
  • Hoarseness or voice changes
  • Chest discomfort or breathlessness

Possible causes:

  • Chronic infections
  • Asthma or allergies
  • Smoking-related lung damage
  • In rare cases, lung or throat cancer

If symptoms persist, a medical check-up is important.

5. Changes in Moles or Skin Growth

Skin changes are often visible and if there is a new mole found in the body or sudden changes to an existing mole or watt. Doctors use the ABCDE rule to identify suspicious moles:

A – Asymmetry: One half looks different from the other

B – Border: Irregular or blurred edges

C – Color: Uneven or changing color

D – Diameter: Increase in size

E – Evolving: Any noticeable change over time. A dermatologist can confirm whether a mole is harmless or needs further testing. If they are unable to tell then biopsy can also help confirm it.

6. Changes in Urination or Bowel Habits

Changes in bathroom habits can also signal internal health issues.

Urinary warning signs:

  • Frequent urination without increased water intake
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urine flow
  • Weak or interrupted urine stream
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying

Bowel warning signs:

  • Persistent constipation or diarrhea
  • Pale or unusually dark stools
  • Blood in stool

Possible causes can also be kidney or bladder issues, prostate problems in men, liver or digestive conditions, rarely, cancers of the urinary or digestive tract.

Other Important Warning Signs

Apart from the six major signs, it is also important to watch for certain other signs

  • Long-lasting fever without reason
  • Wounds that don’t heal
  • Persistent unexplained pain
  • Constant fatigue or weakness

If symptoms continue for weeks, medical evaluation is necessary.

Habits Linked with Higher Risk

  • Frequent consumption of processed meats
  • Excess fried and burnt foods
  • High sugar and refined carbohydrates
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Chronic stress and poor sleep
  • Lack of physical activity

Healthier Habits that May Reduce Risk

  • Balanced home-cooked diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Regular exercise or walking
  • Adequate sleep
  • Stress management techniques (yoga, breathing exercises, meditation)
  • Avoiding smoking and alcohol

Practices like yoga and pranayama may support overall well-being, but they are not a cure for cancer and should never replace medical treatment.

Why Are Cancer Cases Increasing?

There was a time when cancer was considered relatively uncommon in India, but that is no longer the case. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP), more than 15 lakh new cancer cases were estimated in India in 2024, and this number is projected to rise further in the coming years.

But the question here is why is it rising?
Modern lifestyle is one of the biggest contributors to rising cancer risk. Some key factors include:

  • Increased consumption of processed and packaged foods
  • High intake of refined sugar and fried foods
  • Sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity
  • Rising pollution and toxin exposure
  • Chronic stress and poor sleep patterns
  • Genetic predisposition in some individuals

Doctors also emphasize that countries shifting from traditional home-cooked diets to fast food culture are seeing higher health risks over time.

Early Cancer Detection Test

Early cancer detection test usually involves a combination of medical evaluation and diagnostic screening. Doctors assess symptoms, medical history, and risk factors, and may recommend specific tests to identify any abnormal changes in the body at an early stage. These methods help in detecting cancer before it progresses, which significantly improves the chances of successful treatment and better outcomes.

The Bottom Line

Your body often sends signals when something is not right. A lump that does not go away, unexplained bleeding, sudden weight loss, a persistent cough, or noticeable changes in your skin, urine, or stool are worth paying attention to. In most cases, these symptoms are caused by non-cancerous conditions, but getting them evaluated early can provide clarity and peace of mind. Cancer is not always preventable, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle and responding promptly to unusual changes can make a meaningful difference in long-term health outcomes. Cancer if diagnosed early can be treated to a great extent depending on the condition.
