Just ensure you are taking the right seeds during the correct phase of your cycle. Consistency matters more than the actual timing.

How Does Seed Cycling Work ?

It works by rotating specific seeds during different phases of the menstrual or lunar cycle in order to naturally support estrogen and progesterone levels.

Seed Cycling During the Menstrual Cycle

During the menstrual stage, it involves eating specific seeds during the two main phases. During the follicular phase from day 1 to day 14, flax seeds and pumpkin seeds are consumed to boost estrogen levels . During the luteal phase from day 15 to 28 sesame and sunflower seeds are consumed to increase progesterone levels.

Seed Cycling Benefits

There are certain benefits of seed cycling for women health.

Balances Estrogen and Progesterone Naturally

Seed cycling helps regulate hormones by supporting the natural rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone. Flaxseeds are rich in lignans.

Lignans are polyphenolic compounds found in plants, and aid in flushing out excess estrogen.

Pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds offer zinc and selenium – key minerals to boost hormone production as well as liver detoxification.

Improves Ovulation and Fertility

Consistent seed cycling has shown a decrease in mood swings, bloating, cramps, irregular cycle and acne. Women with PCOS or hormonal imbalances often report improvement in their cycle regularity, mental health and overall welnnes.

Causes Of Hormonal Imbalance In Women

High stress levels can increase cortisol levels which in turn leads to a disruption in the natural balance of estrogen and progesterone. A poor diet lacking essential nutrients, consisting of sugary and processed foods, canned or frozen foods and excessive junk food also affects the hormone production and leads to mood swings and anger. Inconsistent sleeping patterns and low quality sleep are also one of the major reasons.

Medical conditions like PCOS, PCOD , thyroid are the major contributors to hormonal imbalances. According to a 2023 study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), hormonal imbalances are strongly linked to metabolic and reproductive disorders, and lifestyle modifications—including natural approaches—can have a significant impact on managing them.

Birth control pills, environment toxins, excessive use of plastic, or even some strong cleaning products can act as a hormone disruptor. Being over and under weight, excessive dieting or loosing or gaining weight in an unhealthy way can also severely impact and stress the hormones. All these factors can throw the delicate hormone system off track, leading to mood swings, irregular periods, depression, demotivation and anxiety attacks.

How Do Seeds Influence Hormonal Balance?

Seeds are rich in nutrients that support hormonal health. Flaxseeds contains lignans which can modulate estrogen levels, while pumpkin seeds provide zinc, which is essential for hormone production. Sesame and sunflower seeds support progesterone levels and reduce inflammation. All the nutrients present in these seeds nourish the endocrine system. A study published in Food Science & Nutrition found that seed cycling significantly improved hormonal markers in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), including reductions in luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels.
