Nasya is a Panchakarma therapy in which medicated oil or herbal liquid is poured through the nose. Ayurveda says “Nasa hi siraso dwaram” which means nose is the gateway to the brain, that is why Nasya is beneficial in problems related to head, sinus, nerves and stress. Even in the oldest Ayurvedic scriptures like the Atharvaveda and Rigveda, there are many hints of Nasya therapy. Those texts describe simple ways to protect the head and keep the senses healthy. In ancient times Ayurvedic physicians considered it a core treatment approach for Shiro- Roga which means disorders related to the head and the nervous system.
During migraine neurogenic inflammation takes place, blood vessels widen, serotonin levels are disturbed, neck and head channels are blocked and due to stress hormonal imbalance is also triggered. [1]

Benefits of Nasya Therapy

1. Migraine and headache relief

Nasya helps in reducing the frequency, intensity and duration of migraine. Oil directly helps calm the nasal nerves and trigeminal pathways, which slows down throbbing pain. It helps reduce inflammation, slows down the pain signals and reduces pressure on the blood vessels.

2. Sinus and nasal blockage

Nasya warm oil helps melt trapped mucus, and instantly opens the nasal pathways. It helps relieve sinus pressure, cheek pain, and heaviness in the forehead and helps ease breathing. [2]

3. Mental Clarity, Calmness, Stress Relief

Nasya directly reaches the brain’s limbic system – which is known to control emotions, stress and relaxation. It helps reduce overthinking, tension headaches, and clears brain fog.[3]

4. Better Sleep

People with insomnia due to stress, experience relief and a calm nervous system. Nasya helps reduce overactive thoughts and the body switches from stress mode to relaxed mode. [4]

5. Neck & Shoulder Relief

Nasya indirectly relaxes neck and shoulder muscles, especially for mobile and laptop users. It helps relax tight muscles and reduces stiffness.[5]

6. Emotional and Hormonal Balance

Nasya calms stress related hormonal imbalance ,warm nasya oil sends signals through the nasal route to the brain relaxation centers. It helps stabilize and calm the mind , which reduces stress related headaches, mood swings, and heaviness.

How to Do Nasya at Home?

Step 1 – Take a warm towel and keep it on your forehead, cheeks and nose, it helps open nasal passages and allows the oil to get absorbed easily.

Step 2– Take a comfortable position , lie down straight and keep a small pillow beneath your neck (chin should be in an upward position). This is the perfect angle for nasya.

Step 3 – Add 2 drops of oil in both the nostrils and do not inhale the oil forcefully, allow it to drain naturally.

Step 4– Deep breathe 2 to 3 times, slow inhalation allows the oil to slide into the head region through the nasal cavity.

Step 5– Clouse your eyes and relax for 2 to 3 minutes.

Step 6– Wipe out the extra mucus gently, avoid blowing your nose harshly.

Step 7– Avoid using mobile phones or laptops for the next 10 to 15 minutes as this is the best time for the oil to absorb.

Best Oils For Nasya

1. Anu Taila
